Vanity Fair criticized online for attributing ‘undeniably gendered’ ‘protein mania’ to MAGA

A Vanity Fair writer faced criticism for suggesting that Donald Trump’s supporters were responsible for the rising trend of “protein enthusiasts” in the U.S.

In her article, Keziah Weir connects the “Make America Great Again” movement with a growing demand for protein products that have been promoted over many years. She highlights figures like podcaster Joe Rogan, who is a prominent voice in this protein-driven culture.

“This might be one of the most frustrating pieces I’ve ever encountered,” someone noted in response to the article.

The piece touches on the history of questionable health science that marketed protein shakes and supplements as cures for various ailments. Eating meat, often tied to traditional views of masculinity, is frequently endorsed in popular podcasts that celebrate a high-protein lifestyle.

Weir concludes somewhat ambiguously, wondering if this protein craze points to deeper issues or just serves as a distraction.

Many on social media have reacted skeptically to Weir’s claims.

“This is possibly the dumbest, most hatred-fueled article I’ve come across. It feels like Vanity Fair is trying to make everyone miserable,” read one comment.

“When Vanity Fair starts complaining about protein, you know everything is going well,” remarked Trent Staggs, the mayor of Utah.

Another user joked, “Vanity Fair is just helping convert Democrats to Republicans.”

One person expressed, “The idea of dismantling patriarchy seems outdated now. It’s just another circular argument that doesn’t make sense anymore.”

Another said, “This magazine might as well go bankrupt. No one takes mainstream publications seriously anymore.”

A survey from 2019 suggested that white Americans contribute more to global warming due to their consumption of high-environmental-impact foods compared to other ethnic groups.
