The Vatican’s Initiative to Engage Younger Worshippers
The Vatican is taking a modern approach to connect with the younger generation. They’re planning to invite influencers and missionaries to help share the church’s message through social media, involving “hot priests” who have garnered significant online followings.
This week, over 1,000 priests and monks are gathering in Rome to enhance efforts aimed at appealing to younger worshippers, as attendance in congregations has been declining.
Among them is Father Giuseppe Fusari, a bodybuilding priest from Brescia, Italy, who boasts over 60,000 followers on Instagram. It’s intriguing how his audience seems to be drawn to more than just traditional religious teachings.
“I hope it brings people closer to the church. There’s a lot of curiosity. I think social media can be a way to attract them,” Fusari said.
At 58, Fusari uses his platform not just to showcase his impressive physique but also to share personal thoughts and spread the gospel.
Interestingly, most of his followers fall between the ages of 25 and 55, showing a solid interest in his posts.
Father Kosimo Shena, known as Italy’s “most beloved” priest, has also seen significant growth in his audience, with his following doubling after he started sharing content on TikTok and Instagram. He’s 46 and hails from Brindisi, Italy, where he has amassed a following of over 454,000 on Instagram, often showcasing his charismatic smile.
Shena frequently posts about his pet dog and advocates for pet adoption, sharing heartfelt moments that resonate with many.
Then there’s Father Ambrogio Mazza, who is just 34 but has already made a name for himself online. With a following of over 460,000, he combines his love for music and biking with his role as a priest, displaying snippets of his life on platforms like Instagram and TikTok.
Mazza often receives compliments from his online followers, with remarks like, “What a beautiful man our father is.” It’s perhaps not surprising given the charm he exudes in his posts.
The efforts to engage with social media audiences align with a broader initiative spearheaded by Pope Leo XIV, who continues the social media mission set forth by Pope Francis and his successor.
Since taking his role, Pope Leo has actively utilized platforms like X to communicate Catholic messages, reaching nearly 19 million followers.
The Vatican has previously experimented with various outreach methods, including plans in 2022 to promote community engagement through charismatic priests. It’s clear that they are seeking new ways to adapt and resonate in today’s digital landscape.
