Vatican Works Urgently to Avoid New Split as Dissident Group Organizes Unauthorized Bishop Ordinations

Vatican Meeting with Traditionalist Groups

Next week, the Vatican is set to engage with leaders from traditionalist groups who’ve announced their intention to consecrate new bishops without papal consent. This move could potentially widen existing rifts in the church that have been developing for decades.

Cardinal Victor Manuel Fernández expressed an interest in “exploring avenues for fruitful dialogue” with the clergy. This follows a statement from David Pagliarani, the senior leader of the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX), which publicly revealed its ordination plans recently.

The SSPX claims to exist in “incomplete communion” with the Vatican, emphasizing only the traditional Latin Mass while rejecting many of the key teachings and reforms established by Vatican II.

Founded in Switzerland by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, the SSPX faced excommunication back in 1988 after Lefebvre consecrated four bishops without approval from the Vatican. Despite its growing membership, the fraternity continues to maintain a tense relationship with the church.

Pagliarani mentioned that he had reached out to Pope Leo XIV in August for a meeting but felt ignored, which led him to proceed with the consecration. He criticized the Vatican’s lack of response, stating that they hadn’t addressed their inquiries at all.

While the SSPX is often viewed as a severe example of opposition to Vatican II, it’s not alone in its stance. Other traditionalist movements, although not as radical, also champion the Latin Mass and question the council’s reforms. Organizations like Una Voce International and the Latin Mass Association of England and Wales issued a joint statement distancing themselves from the SSPX. They acknowledge a shared objective of preserving the Church’s ancient liturgy but clarify they do not fully align with the SSPX’s perspective on the Church’s issues.

Nevertheless, these groups warned that the Vatican’s increasing hostility toward the traditional Latin Mass is fostering an environment where the SSPX’s claims of a “state of emergency” are resonating more than ever. They urged church leadership to take these pastoral realities into account.
