Venezuelan Man Faces Multiple Felony Charges in Arizona

A man from Venezuela has been charged with multiple felonies in Arizona, including terrorism, after reportedly threatening local residents at gunpoint while asserting control over parts of a Maricopa County community.

Javier Enrique Eraso Zuniga, 27, allegedly tried to extort money from residents, making threats with deadly weapons, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS). It was reported that he claimed authority over certain areas in Maricopa.

The investigation reportedly kicked off in December when local detectives received tips regarding Eraso Zuniga’s claims of owning Maricopa’s Hidden Valley, demanding money from victims.

According to authorities, he was linked to several violent incidents involving residents. For instance, in one event in 2024, he allegedly placed a victim in a headlock and brandished a knife, inflicting a wound. More recently, he reportedly waited at a victim’s driveway and aimed a gun at them.

During a search of his bedroom, police discovered a firearm they believe was used in a December shooting, as noted by DPS spokesman Bart Graves. Currently, Eraso Zuniga is held at the Pinal County Jail on a $250,000 bond after being booked there. A grand jury has since indicted him.

The charges against him include aggravated assault with a firearm, forgery, and various weapons offenses, including unlawfully possessing a handgun. Prosecutors contend that the aggravated assault charge is particularly severe due to the use of a firearm or threats involved.

Moreover, Eraso Zuniga faces accusations of aiding a criminal street gang and terrorism, although these were mentioned by law enforcement rather than explicitly included in the latest indictment. It’s also possible that more serious federal charges could be on the horizon.

He’s set to be arraigned on Friday, and while investigators believe there are more victims, some may be reluctant to speak up.

Graves encouraged anyone with information related to the case to reach out via their tip line. The DPS has urged anyone who might have information to call 602-644-5805.

The unfolding situation comes during a time where there is growing scrutiny of Venezuelan criminal organizations by domestic law enforcement, following a number of significant investigations in Colorado over recent years.

Federal prosecutors in the nation have charged another Venezuelan citizen in connection with crimes related to the transnational gang Torren de Aragua, which has stirred up discussions around organized violence in various regions. Although early narratives of gang “takeovers” were later questioned, officials confirmed numerous violent incidents tied to criminal activities and armed individuals.
