Vernikov welcomes Netanyahu to NYC following Mamdani's pledge to detain him.

Republican members of the New York City Council are challenging Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani’s campaign promises by inviting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the city on January 1, which coincides with Mamdani’s inauguration. This move seems to contest Mamdani’s earlier statements regarding the potential arrest of Jewish leaders.

Inna Vernikov, who represents Brooklyn’s 48th District, a community with a significant Jewish population, announced on social media that Netanyahu will be invited on the day of Mamdani’s swearing-in.

The International Criminal Court (ICC), which the U.S. does not recognize, has issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu on allegations of “war crimes” in Gaza.

During his campaign, Mamdani suggested that he would pursue legal action against Netanyahu should he enter the city while in office.

Vernikov remarked on the recent comments from Mamdani, labeling them unreasonable, and reiterated that regardless of differing opinions about Israeli policies, Netanyahu is the legitimate Prime Minister of a democratic nation, embodying values such as hope and resilience amidst regional turmoil.

Vernikov further emphasized that Mamdani’s proposals, including his plan to arrest Netanyahu, are unrealistic and that those who elected him will soon realize the disparity between his campaign rhetoric and reality.

Representative Jerry Nadler, a supporter of Mamdani, criticized the arrest idea as lacking basis in law, stating that NYC cannot enforce such measures.

Since entering the political scene, Mamdani faced heavy scrutiny from Jewish communities for some of his views on Israel, yet he was recently elected mayor.

After the election, Mamdani attempted to calm doubts among Jewish constituents by affirming his commitment to combating anti-Semitism and emphasizing support for Jewish New Yorkers.

In October, a large group of rabbis denounced Mamdani’s views on Israel, labeling them as anti-Semitic and arguing that his beliefs fundamentally conflict with the values cherished by their community.
