Republican Veterans Urge Service Members to Uphold Orders
Republican lawmakers in Congress are calling on military personnel to “stand strong” in support of law and order, responding to a recent message from a Democratic lawmaker suggesting troops disobey “unlawful” directives.
Rep. Zach Nunn from Iowa, a military veteran himself, expressed his concerns on Tuesday’s “Hannity” show, stating, “I’ve served in combat missions and I know what happens when people don’t follow orders. This cannot happen to the men and women currently serving.”
Alongside other Republican colleagues, Nunn participated in a video that encourages service members to dismiss the Democratic message.
Critics within the Republican party argue that the Democrats’ video poses a threat to the military’s chain of command. In contrast, Democrats maintain that it only warns service members against engaging in any illegal activities.
Army Secretary Pete Hegseth has demanded an investigation into Senator Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.), who appeared in the Democratic video. Kelly, a former Navy captain, has received backlash from his Republican peers.
Rep. Rich McCormick from Georgia, a Gulf War veteran, specifically criticized Kelly’s actions, stating on “Hannity” that his comments were “terrible for a variety of reasons.” McCormick further accused Kelly of being insincere, calling the Democratic video “totally political.”
The FBI has announced that it is coordinating with the Department of the Army to arrange interviews with the six congressional members featured in the video.
Senator Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.), who shared the video, claimed on social media that they created it in response to what she viewed as the president’s misuse of government power against perceived adversaries.
Medal of Honor recipient Sergeant Dakota Meyer characterized the video as “unacceptable,” highlighting the potential for “catastrophic” outcomes. He posed a thought-provoking question regarding trust in the military, asking, “Do you no longer trust the men and women in uniform, or do you simply disagree with what the president is doing?”
