Vice President JD Vance Reflects on His Catholic Faith

In his new book, *Communion: Finding the Way Back to the Faith*, Vice President JD Vance shares his personal journey of rediscovering faith, describing it as feeling “like home.” He recently discussed this on “Jesse Watters Prime Time,” highlighting the long path he traveled to reconnect with God after feeling lost in his youth.

Vance expressed that societal expectations from the “American elite culture” often pulled him away from focusing on what truly matters. He reminisced about how he became overly preoccupied with superficial aspects like education, wealth, and fame, rather than deeper values.

However, everything changed with the birth of his son and his marriage. “I married this amazing woman and became a father,” he reflected. This life transition shifted his priorities, pushing him to explore questions like how to be virtuous and supportive. Through this deeper contemplation, he found himself returning to his faith.

He credited his grandmother for instilling the initial “seed” of faith in him during his early years, realizing the importance of having a strong foundation. Soon after, he sought solace in the church.

In a recent comment, Vance noted the rapid changes in the world around him. He found comfort in the Catholic Church’s ancient traditions, some dating back thousands of years. “When I attended a Catholic church, it felt like home,” he added.

His wife, Usha Vance, despite her own different upbringing, has been a pillar of support throughout his faith journey. “Even though Usha wasn’t raised as a Christian, she encouraged me to explore my faith and attended church with me every Sunday,” he shared.

Usha emphasized how converting to Christianity made Vance a “better person.” He acknowledged the unique dynamics of raising two Catholic children, expressing hope that they would each find their own connection to God. “I believe God has a plan for all of us,” he said, reflecting on the importance of encouraging his children in their individual spiritual journeys.
