Victims of January 6: The families, children, and the impact of a politicized Justice Department

Revisiting January 6: A Deeper Look

A recent article delves into the actions of President Donald Trump regarding the January 6, 2021, events, sharing insights from a prosecutor who lost his job after the incident. The piece positions these attorneys as champions of political purification, emphasizing how they left their personal belongings behind, reminiscent of unjust victims.

This portrayal, however, overlooks the profound fallout resulting from the government’s response on January 6. Families were torn apart, children suffered, facing years of harsh legal actions that felt politically charged.

The prosecutor wasn’t a champion; they were merely instruments of a system that crafted martyrs from ordinary citizens. Working closely with these families has illuminated the lasting repercussions of the Department of Justice’s exceptional tactics. The narrative cannot be rewritten. Prosecutors often depict themselves as victims, erasing the lives of those they targeted from the public’s memory.

Unsung Victims

The children of those charged on January 6 are among the most neglected victims. They’ve lived through harrowing government raids, etched in their memories forever. Many recall the heart-stopping moments when Flash-Bang devices detonated in their homes.

They remember armed officials bursting through doors, shattering glass, and entering their rooms. Watching their mother in distress, they attempted to bring their families back together as their fathers were taken away in cuffs. In some cases, both parents were arrested, leaving children fearful of losing their entire families.

This wasn’t an action taken by a foreign dictatorship; it occurred right here in the U.S. These operations targeted harmless families and caused lasting harm to innocent children. Yet, now those prosecutors are framed as political martyrs.

This narrative is a distortion of reality. They were not heroes; rather, they were part of a system that marginalized ordinary citizens.

The Story of Matthew Perna

The case of Matthew Perna illustrates the very human cost of these prosecutions. Perna entered the Capitol, filmed a video, and left without engaging in violence or damage. Nonetheless, prosecutors pursued aggressive charges against him, even labeling his actions as “enhancing terrorism,” which magnified his sentencing dramatically. Media outlets echoed this narrative, labeling him a national threat.

The immense burden from this collective persecution was unbearable for Perna, leading to his tragic suicide before the verdict. His experience highlights the cruelty inherent in the government’s approach, compounded by media complicity. Today, those involved in such prosecutions are seeking pity for their professional losses, while families like Matthew’s are left mourning irreparable personal losses.

A Disturbing Double Standard

The wider context reveals significant political double standards. While Democrats label January 6th as one of America’s darkest moments, the riots of 2020—where federal buildings were attacked, businesses decimated, police officers assaulted, and communities engulfed in flames—are frequently described as “mostly peaceful.”

The unjust killing of retired police Captain David Dorn during a live stream, while he defended his community, sparked outrage yet resulted in minimal repercussions compared to the severe prosecutions of January 6 participants. Where’s the “enhanced terrorism” in those cases? We have yet to see years of solitary confinement or relentless media scrutiny for those events.

The reality is stark: political angst on the left is often minimized or excused, whereas protests involving Trump supporters are quickly labeled as terrorism. This inconsistency undermines public trust in justice being applied fairly.

Calls for Reform

In light of this backdrop, Attorney General Pam Bondy and special counsel Ed Martin deserve recognition for their efforts to restore fairness within a compromised system. Bondy’s decisive actions led to the removal of prosecutors who exhibited that justice couldn’t be disentangled from politics.

After witnessing January 6’s repercussions, Martin understood the imperative that Americans shouldn’t be criminalized for aligning with a specific political movement. His initiative to halt the ongoing prosecutions brought accountability to those who weaponized the judicial process.

The New York Times labeled this a “purge,” but it’s more accurately viewed as a necessary course correction. It is an attempt to reestablish integrity within the Department of Justice and affirm that the judiciary should not cater to partisan agendas.

The real casualties of January 6 weren’t the prosecutors but over 1,500 Americans ensnared in a politicized framework. They were families left devastated, children shaken awake by explosions, and individuals like Matthew Perna, who succumbed beneath the weight of unjust treatment.

There are also the allies who stood by President Trump, First Lady Melania, their son Barron, and confronted years of political investigations, public attacks, and the presence of heavily armed SWAT teams. These outcomes arose from a government that chose to wield its power not against criminals, but against perceived political adversaries.

Setting the Record Straight

We must ensure these truths are not lost. Allowing a prosecutor to rewrite history as though they were a champion is unacceptable. The agony of families, the cries of children separated from their parents, and the tragic end for Matthew Perna must not fade from collective memory.

American justice must adhere to its core principles, safeguarding fairness for all, irrespective of political lines. Until this vital principle is reinstated, we need to continue advocating for those whose lives have been irrevocably altered by the government’s misuse of power.

This isn’t about vengeance; it’s about the truth. It transcends politics. It’s about ensuring that no one has to live in fear, waking to the sound of destruction and losing loved ones due to political machinations.
