Wembanyama Becomes Knicks’ Foe as Spurs Narrow Series

Victor Wembanyama stepped into the role of the Knicks’ antagonist as the Spurs came away with a 115-111 victory in Game 3 of the NBA Finals on Monday night.

Fans at Madison Square Garden, known for their spirited support, directed their frustration at Wembanyama and his squad. Nevertheless, the Spurs managed to claw back in the series, reducing the Knicks’ lead to 2-1.

This loss was a significant shift for Knicks’ fans who hadn’t experienced a defeat since April 23, coinciding with the start of the 2026 NFL Draft. They were accustomed to celebrating wins.

What contributed to this break in momentum? Wembanyama delivered his best performance in the series, scoring 32 points, grabbing 8 rebounds, providing 6 assists, and blocking 3 shots.

Despite the intense atmosphere, Wembanyama doesn’t see himself as the ultimate villain in New York.

When questioned if he took the crowd’s hostility as a form of flattery, he hesitated, indicating he felt he didn’t quite measure up to established New York adversaries.

“I guess so,” Wembanyama remarked, “but I’m not even close to Trae Young’s level.”

Though he’s certainly faced the ire of Knicks supporters, he hasn’t adopted Young’s showboating style or engagement with the fans during crucial moments, as Young did in 2021 when he led the Hawks to a playoff victory over the Knicks.

Wembanyama did, however, provoke fans by shoving Jalen Brunson during the first half of the match, making him the latest target of their displeasure.

During the game, chants of “F–k you, Wemby” echoed through the arena.

Yet, he appears to be embracing the New York experience. Last season, he even invited New Yorkers to a game of chess in Washington Square Park.

Before Monday’s game, he was spotted sketching at Gramercy Park.

The list of infamous figures in New York is extensive, but the Knicks’ particular disdain for their rivals creates a unique bond among the city’s residents.

If Wembanyama maintains his performance level from Monday night, it’s likely he’ll only fuel that animosity further.
