Explosion at Staten Island Pier Leaves One Dead, Many Injured
A significant explosion at a crowded pier in Staten Island occurred on Friday, resulting in one fatality and injuring 36 people, primarily first responders. Among those injured were two members of the Fire Department of New York (FDNY), who are reportedly hospitalized with serious injuries.
The incident happened around 4:20 p.m. in Mariners Harbor, specifically at May Ship Repair located on Richmond Terrace. Firefighters battled the ensuing fire for roughly an hour after the explosion.
The exact cause of the explosion remains unknown.
New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani acknowledged the bravery of first responders in a post on X, stating, “Thank you to the first responders who rushed toward danger without hesitation. As you all do every day, you put yourself in harm’s way for others to escape. Our city owes you a debt of gratitude.”
Later that evening, the mayor shared that one FDNY fire marshal was in critical but stable condition due to a small brain hemorrhage and a temporal fracture, while another firefighter was also in critical but stable condition.
The identity of the civilian who lost their life has not yet been disclosed. Mayor Mamdani expressed condolences, saying, “We mourn the lives lost today and hold their families in our hearts.”
The injuries from the explosion included 31 firefighters, four emergency medical services personnel, and one civilian.
Initial reports indicate that the FDNY commenced firefighting efforts at 3:27 p.m. after a fire broke out in the basement of a large building on waterfront property. Authorities issued a second warning shortly before the explosion, leading to an urgent response that involved 70 vehicles and around 200 fire and emergency personnel.
According to reports, just 11 minutes after the second warning, a massive explosion occurred while a crew was conducting an active search on the barge.
The fire was eventually extinguished by 7:20 p.m., and paramedics transported the injured to a local hospital.
Investigations into the cause of the explosion are being carried out by the FDNY Hazardous Materials Team, along with the Departments of Buildings and Environmental Protection.
