Reactions to Stephen Colbert’s Show Cancellation
Responses to the cancellation of Stephen Colbert’s late-night show have varied widely, but John Stewart’s reaction stands out, perhaps for its intensity.
On Thursday, CBS informed Colbert of his show’s cancellation, suggesting that the network’s parent company, Paramount Global, is attempting to placate the Trump administration during its pursuit of an $8 billion merger with SkyDance Media.
Stewart didn’t hold back his criticism of this decision. He even recruited a choir to deliver a rather explosive response that many found embarrassing. His exclamation, “Go to f**k yourself! f**k, f**k, f**k yourself, just f**k yourself!” echoed in the background as the choir chimed in.
In his tirade, Stewart accused CBS of targeting Colbert, asserting that the network is trying to gain favor with President Donald Trump. It’s worth noting that Stewart’s own show airs on Comedy Central, which is also under Paramount Global.
Stewart’s comments raised eyebrows as he questioned whether the network believed that by appearing harmless, they could avoid backlash from the so-called “Boy King.” That phrasing, though certainly colorful, underscored his discontent with the decision.
Meanwhile, social media users largely criticized Stewart’s display as immature. One investigative journalist remarked, “The left-wing media is home to the titled, spoiled brat.” Another user commented that Stewart’s actions reflect the kind of partisanship that might eventually lead him down a similar path as Colbert. That felt a bit like an unfinished thought—like perhaps there’s more to consider there.
Some responses went even further, stating that the singing of curse-laden messages by a choir was both low and unnecessarily profane. It sparked discussions about the appropriateness of such displays in a public forum.
There were also accusations, albeit without concrete evidence, that Trump had a hand in the cancellation, with critics labeling it another example of “fascism” from the administration. Despite the show’s cancellation, Colbert is expected to continue addressing Trump and the actions of Paramount Global when given the opportunity.
