Shallow Policy Discussion from DSA Co-Chair

The interview conducted by David Remnick with Megan Romer, co-chair of the Democratic Socialist Party of America, revealed that the depth of their policy positions might be lacking.

During the conversation on “The New Yorker Radio Hour,” Remnick simply inquired about the implications of taxing billionaires “to the hilt.” Romer’s response suggested she wasn’t entirely clear on what that meant.

“Again, it’s a democracy, right? We need to consider our spending needs,” she said, emphasizing a desire not to rely on billionaires, as that could lead to exploitation.

Before reiterating her concerns about billionaires, Romer noted, “Most billionaires usually acquire their wealth by exploiting the working class.” She then laughed when she said they believe in taxing billionaires “to the hilt.”

When Remnick pressed for clarity on what “taxed to the hilt” entails, she admitted, “Yeah. Also, I don’t have solid food,” again lightening the mood with laughter.

Remnick contradicted her relaxed tone by asking, “Shouldn’t a DSA co-chair offer more specificity on outright taxation?” Romer responded, reiterating the need to consider their spending requirements and again stating that dependency on billionaires leads to exploitation.

“We should think about our immediate future expenses and the tax base required for that,” she added.

This exchange gained traction on social media, with many sharing clips of the interview. Some are concerned that the rise in DSA approval ratings—following notable primary victories—signals an extremist shift within the party.

In response, certain Democrats are pushing back, forming groups to challenge the increasing influence of the party’s radical wing.
