An elderly man from Minnesota suffering from dementia was defrauded of $1.6 million by his former neighbor, who is now facing a four-year prison sentence.

Joseph Robinson, 41, had previously lived next to 85-year-old Edward Solstad, who was reported to be in the early stages of dementia. This information came to light in a report by KARE 11.

The situation escalated when Robinson told Solstad he would renovate his home in Minneapolis. However, it appeared Robinson was dominating various aspects of Solstad’s life, prompting him to write checks and accompany him to medical appointments.

In a strange twist, Solstad legally adopted Robinson, granted him power of attorney, and transferred ownership of his home to him. According to Mary Solstad, Edward’s sister, family relationships deteriorated significantly due to this manipulation.

“Edward used to call me his evil sister, which really stung because we were once very close. I think what hurt even more than the money stolen was that he took my brother away from me,” she recounted. “Eventually, Joe’s influence led Edward into advanced dementia, drawing him deeper into the situation.”

Prosecutors revealed that Robinson had extracted $1.6 million from Solstad’s bank account, but the funds were never recovered. In court, Robinson still referred to Edward as his father, while acknowledging his guilt in committing wire fraud.

The judge overseeing the case was Jerry Blackwell, who has ties to the Derek Chauvin murder trial. Following his release by former President Joe Biden, Robinson turned himself in to serve his prison sentence.

Meanwhile, KARE’s Lou Raguz captured footage of Robinson exiting the courtroom, where a man accompanying him shouted at a reporter who asked if Robinson wished to comment on the case. The man repeatedly insisted Robinson would not talk, while a woman intervened to take him away.

The Alzheimer’s Association lists several signs of dementia, including issues with short-term memory, tracking belongings, and difficulty navigating outside familiar areas.
