The video showed a crowd of students watching and recording two girls starting throwing punches at each other at Magnolia School of Excellence in Shreveport on Monday.
School officials reportedly used pepper spray to disperse the crowd.
The video was posted to TikTok, with the description simply reading “Moments before the disaster.” KSLA-TV published A longer version of the video showed school officials and children complaining about pepper spray.
KSLA-TV reported that parents reached out to express their anger over the use of pepper spray on their students. They said some children were experiencing side effects from being sprayed in the incident.
On Tuesday, the school released a statement saying the scuffle was between two students and confirming only that officers used pepper spray.
“Magnolia School of Excellence takes pride in creating a safe environment that helps learn and build strong minds and good hearts. As part of our safety plan, we are committed to maintaining a safe learning environment on campus. Shreveport Police Officers are stationed inside,” the statement said.
“Yesterday, during an altercation between two students, the police officers on duty made the decision to lawfully use pepper spray to disperse the crowd,” it concluded.
2018 Caddo Parish School Board voted for extension Magnolia School of Excellence complied with this charter despite receiving a “D” grade from the Louisiana Department of Education in 2016 and an “F” grade in November 2017.
One school board member said they voted to continue the charter because the school accepts children with behavioral problems.
Magnolia is a tuition-free charter school for students in grades 6-12. Approximately 1,200 students attend this school.
