Vietnam veteran says he’s ‘honored’ to give Trump his Purple Heart after assassination attempt: ‘Small token’

Former President Trump met on Friday with a Vietnam veteran whose assassination attempt on Trump led to him awarding him a Purple Heart.

“I couldn't think of anyone more deserving of a Purple Heart,” the man, identified only as Dwight, told President Trump on stage at a town hall campaign event in Fayetteville, North Carolina.

“You took it. You laid there, you came back, and the first words out of your mouth were, 'Fight, fight, fight.'” Dwight said Trump was 7 He spoke about the time the 20-year-old was shot in Butler, Pennsylvania, in May. 1 year old attempted assassin.

“You didn't even have anything to shoot back at him. You had courage. It was a minor injury, but it was close to a serious one.”

President Trump said, “We were very lucky, but maybe we weren't that lucky. Maybe there's something else? Maybe there's something else. “Maybe.” he answered.

Earlier at Town Hall, the moderator, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Florida), read aloud letters sent by military veterans to Trump after the assassination attempt in July.

“Dear President Trump, my wife and I breathed a sigh of relief and shed a few tears when we saw you stand up at the Butler rally,” Dwight's letter read. “I would be honored if you would accept this little token that I received as a young Marine in Vietnam.

“My wife and I both thought it was appropriate. God bless you, your family, and the United States of America. Sincerely, Dwight.”

President Trump responded, “I'm very lucky.” “And maybe it wasn't that lucky. Maybe it's something else, right? Maybe there's something else out there.”

The moment came the day before Trump returned to Butler to hold his first large rally in the outdoor space where he was shot.

The Purple Heart is awarded to military personnel who are wounded or killed in combat.
