Vincent Trocheck loses his temper in Rangers' defeat

Rangers’ Frustrations Mount in Loss to Sabres

In a challenging game on Thursday night, the Rangers fell to the Sabres 5-2, and Vincent Trocheck’s frustrations boiled over during the second period. Head coach Mike Sullivan stood by the center after he received an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

Prior to the Sabres’ second goal, Trocheck found himself in a tangle with Sabers center Josh Norris. In a moment of frustration, he threw Norris’ stick toward the bench, seemingly asking for a penalty as the play carried on. However, before anything could be resolved, Bowen Byram passed the puck to Alex Tuch, allowing Buffalo to extend their lead to 2-0. Trocheck’s penalty came shortly thereafter, putting the Rangers, already down two points, in a tight spot.

Sullivan remarked on Trocheck’s competitive nature, saying, “We hope we don’t penalize him, but when he’s at his best, he gets under the skin of his opponents, and I thought he did that tonight.”

Meanwhile, Mika Zibanejad also expressed frustration over the Rangers’ power play towards the end of the second period. The team had a chance to score and take the lead, but a few players failed to capitalize, swinging the puck past Sabers goaltender Colton Ellis and ultimately missing the net. A goal at that point could have changed the momentum, bringing the Rangers within one goal heading into the final period.

Despite the setbacks and frustrations, both Zibanejad and Trocheck managed to score for the Rangers, with Zibanejad netting one in the second and Trocheck coming through at the start of the third. Unfortunately, their push for a tying goal didn’t pan out this time.

“We know our home record isn’t great. We’re aware of the stakes,” Zibanejad said, reflecting on their performance. “If you don’t display your frustration, it makes me worry more. Sometimes emotions need to show, but, I mean, other times, I think you just have to let it go.”

JT Miller made a return to the lineup after missing seven games due to an upper-body injury. He shared that he needed to be cautious, as he had suffered the same injury twice in a short period. Despite his reservations, Miller’s presence was felt quickly on the ice, assisting Trocheck’s goal a mere 51 seconds into the third period.

He registered three shots and two hits during his 20 minutes and 24 seconds of ice time.

After this latest loss, Sullivan remains stuck at 499 career wins. Additionally, winger Alexis Lafreniere, who missed practice earlier this week due to illness, played but incurred a costly turnover leading to the Sabres’ insurance goal. Meanwhile, center Noah Laba skated in a non-contact jersey during the morning session, still recovering from an upper-body injury.

On a lighter note, the Rangers celebrated their 100th anniversary theme night, recognizing fan favorites with former players like Nick Fotiu, Don Maroney, and Henrik Lundqvist in attendance.
