A viral video from a high school soccer match in South Dakota depicts an altercation between players, leading to a police inquiry.
The match featured the Brookings High School Bobcats against the Rapid City Central Cobblers and took a chaotic turn when one player reacted aggressively after a defensive move.
The footage of the incident has garnered more than 18 million views on X.
This occurred right before the halftime break on Friday, with the game being broadcast online.
A player from the Cobblers forcefully shoved a Bobcats player, kicked him in the back, and then proceeded to throw punches.
The attacked player attempted to shield his face while other players and adults intervened to halt the assault.
Moments later, a fellow Bobcats player joined in and began punching as well.
The Cobblers player received a red card and was expelled from the game. As per league regulations, he is required to take part in sportsmanship training.
There’s also the possibility of him facing criminal charges.
Brookings Police Chief Michael Drake informed KELO-TV that they are actively investigating the incident and plan to speak with over 100 witnesses. They will also review several videos, in addition to the viral clip.
A statement from the Rapid City Area School District addressed the incident, indicating they are aware of the altercation between players during the game.
They emphasized the expectation for all students to show respect and sportsmanship, stating, “We will not tolerate behavior that does not meet these expectations, and proper actions will be enforced according to RCAS policies and procedures.”
The South Dakota High School Athletic Association also labeled the incident “unacceptable” in their response, mentioning that they are collaborating with school officials on this matter.
“Generally, disciplinary measures beyond expulsion are considered by the school, and Rapid City Central is currently evaluating this within their disciplinary framework,” the association noted. “They have been keeping us informed, and we support them in their efforts.”
