Recently, a 20-year-old British man was attacked in Birmingham by a group of individuals, all while police officers were nearby. A female officer intervened, but rather than assisting the victim, she restrained and arrested him, allowing the assailants to escape.
Following the incident, Birmingham police seemingly attempted to portray the victim, Cody Harper, as the aggressor and suppress information that contradicted their narrative.
Public outrage surged, highlighting the criticism surrounding perceived inequalities within the British policing system. This backlash ultimately led to the collapse of the case against Harper.
Incident
In a video from June 21, a group of men is seen attacking Harper in Broad Street. Initially, one individual struck Harper and knocked him down. As he tried to get back up, the officer restrained him against a wall. Mistakenly thinking he was being attacked again, Harper swung a punch, albeit unintentionally hitting the officer’s hat off. The officer, who did not identify herself, proceeded to arrest him, calling him inappropriate names.
She claimed he was being arrested for assaulting a police officer, even as the footage contradicted her actions.
Response
The incident quickly gained viral attention, sparking a formal police statement. Birmingham Police acknowledged the footage showing a man being apprehended for a disturbance, mentioning that there was a fight involving several men. They indicated a man was charged with assaulting an officer.
However, the police were later criticized for urging the public not to share the video, which they did not heed. Instead, scrutiny grew regarding how Harper had been treated, leading to widespread discussion in political circles.
A spokesperson from Nigel Farage’s UK Reform Party remarked that if a white man is attacked by individuals from an ethnic minority, the police seem to hesitate until the victim is down, focusing more on him than the attackers.
Another MP expressed disbelief over the situation, stating that the video clearly showcased Harper’s victimization and questioned the police’s aggressive approach toward him.
Figures like Robert Jenrick also condemned the police’s handling of the matter, specifically highlighting that the attackers faced no consequences.
In the aftermath of escalating criticisms, the police did somewhat amend their stance by announcing an investigation to identify those involved in the assault.
Despite this acknowledgment, Harper was still facing charges and was scheduled for court in late July.
Charges Dropped
Eventually, the Crown Prosecution Service decided there wasn’t enough evidence to proceed with charges against Harper and canceled the case entirely.
They expressed recognition of the seriousness of assaults on emergency workers but maintained there was insufficient evidence for prosecution in this instance.
Despite the dropping of charges, the West Midlands Police, including Birmingham authorities, have not issued an apology for their actions toward Harper. Instead, they maintained that his arrest was lawful due to an assault on the officer.
The attackers were identified but ultimately only faced minor penalties instead of formal charges, causing further criticism. The notion of unequal policing based on race was underscored by critics, who called for fair treatment for everyone, regardless of their background.
