Virginia Governor Ends Partnership with Federal Immigration Authorities

Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger announced on Wednesday the termination of a partnership involving several state agencies and federal immigration authorities.

Spanberger, who positioned herself as a moderate, issued an executive order to end the 287(g) agreement. This agreement previously allowed agencies such as the Virginia State Police, the Department of Corrections, the Department of Wildlife, and the Virginia Marine Resources Commission to work with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

In her order, Spanberger expressed that these agreements unfairly transferred discretion and authority over law enforcement in Virginia to federal entities. “I have full confidence in Virginia’s law enforcement officers to keep Virginia safe as they exercise their powers under Virginia law,” she stated. The order reiterated that Virginia law enforcement would continue to use their available powers under valid judicial warrants.

Interestingly, the 287(g) program is designed to allow local law enforcement the authority to assist in various immigration duties under ICE’s supervision, such as identifying undocumented immigrants in local jails to prevent their release into communities.

When Spanberger took office in January, she also rescinded a prior executive order that was meant to compel state law enforcement agencies to replace local police officers with ICE agents.

The governor’s office emphasized that Spanberger’s actions would allow Virginia law enforcement to focus on their primary responsibilities: investigating crimes, enforcing state and local laws, and ensuring public safety.

However, Spanberger and the state Democrats face criticism from Republicans who argue that limiting collaboration with federal immigration authorities could hinder law enforcement efforts.

This decision comes amidst ongoing national discussions about immigration enforcement, particularly heightened tensions in locations like Minnesota over policies from the previous Trump administration.

In related news, Virginia Democrats are advocating for new tax increases, raising eyebrows as they strive for affordability across the state.

Spanberger’s office has been approached for further comments regarding the implications of this decision.
