Virginia public school faces backlash, students reportedly played segregation game

A public school in Alexandria, Virginia, is under investigation after students reportedly played a game that segregated black students on campus.

Fox 5 The Washington, D.C. newspaper reported that the incident happened at Lyles Crouch Traditional Academy, which its website describes as a K-5 public school in Old Town Alexandria with a diverse student body.

Students reportedly played the game during social studies class, and Principal Laura Burkhart wrote a letter to parents notifying them of the incident.

In his letter, Burkhart reportedly did not apologize for the incident but said the game was inappropriate.

The station spoke off-camera with a parent who said her African-American daughter had been a victim of so-called segregation games.

The mother told the station that the students who attended the game had apologized, but Burkhart had not.

The fourth grade students were in the schoolyard after school while the game was taking place.

The mother said several white students told her daughter she couldn’t enter or play with the fictional school because she was black.

When the mother met with Burkhart, the principal reportedly became emotional and also demanded that the students apologize to the mother’s daughter.

Still, her mother told the station that Burkhart’s response has further estranged her from her daughter.

And her daughter wasn’t the only one involved: In fact, the station reported that several other minority children had been barred from playing with white children.

Fox News Digital reached out to the school for comment but did not immediately receive a response.
