Secretary of State Marco Rubio has implemented visa restrictions affecting 18 individuals linked to the Iranian government. This move was announced on Wednesday and stems from the Iranian government’s decision to cut internet access for its citizens.
Rubio noted that this shutdown is hampering the ability of Iranians to report on human rights abuses while protests against the government are ongoing. He emphasized that the regime’s actions are a significant limitation on freedom, saying, “The regime imposed a near-total nationwide internet shutdown that was unprecedented in scope and duration, severely limiting independent documentation of abuses and cutting off Iranians from the rest of the world.”
President Donald Trump has also cautioned Iran about potential further attacks if the oppression of basic freedoms continues. A spokesperson for the administration stated that while diplomacy is the preferred approach, Iran would be wise to negotiate a deal. They highlighted that Trump makes decisions based on what’s best for the United States.
In his statement, Rubio reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to supporting the Iranian people’s struggle for freedom, declaring, “The United States continues to support the Iranian people’s right to free expression. We reaffirm our unwavering support for the Iranian people and their demands for peace and dignity.” He also mentioned the use of various tools to hold Iranian officials accountable for human rights violations.
