Voters give positive feedback on Trump's deportation efforts, according to a poll

Efforts by the Trump administration to track down and deport undocumented immigrants are generally supported by the public, though opinions vary on how far the government should go, according to recent polls.

A survey found that 54% of U.S. adults approve of these deportation efforts, while 46% disapprove, as reported by CBS News/YouGov.

This polling occurred just before protests erupted in Los Angeles over federal immigration enforcement. In response, President Trump dispatched the National Guard to help calm local leaders’ concerns.

New York City also experienced disturbances as a crowd attempted to obstruct immigrant raids by authorities.

Polls consistently indicate that immigration remains a strong issue for Trump, despite the complexities posed by various Democratic responses to his deportation strategies.

Opinions of Democrats have taken a hit, with 78% of survey respondents labeling their leaders as “ineffective.”

While many Americans support Trump’s stance on immigration, there are mixed feelings about specific aspects of his policies. Research indicates that 42% believe his deportation actions enhance public safety, while 30% see no significant change.

About half of respondents think Trump is deporting more individuals than anticipated, even with the backdrop of his 2024 campaign rhetoric. From that group, 42% approve of the numbers, whereas 58% do not.

Among voters who think the deportation rates are about the same or fewer than expected, 66% are supportive, while 34% disapprove.

A notable 63% want assurances that undocumented immigrants can express their cases before deportation. Additionally, 39% believe Trump’s deportation strategy could harm the U.S. economy, although they still perceive its protective effects.

Trump has called on Congress to bolster his deportation measures and provide more resources for safeguarding the U.S.-Mexico border.

Regarding immigration, he garnered a 50% approval rating, exceeding his scores for economic management (42%) and overall performance (45%).

Traditionally, the economy has been a significant point of contention against his administration, affecting both his first term and recent reelection efforts, especially considering public dissatisfaction with his tariff strategies.

Only 41% of voters support implementing new tariffs on imported goods, while 59% oppose them.

Perhaps more concerning for Trump, 75% believe these tariffs primarily benefit the wealthy.

A similar sentiment emerged regarding a major bill he introduced. Sixty percent think it would mainly aid the rich, while 31% believe it would help the middle class and 26% feel it would assist lower-income individuals. A third of the voters were unsure of the bill’s contents, and 23% expressed little interest.

The bill, referred to as Megaville, proposes extensions to the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, reinforces border security, boosts defense spending, and includes various other conservative initiatives.

The CBS News/YouGov survey was conducted with 2,428 adults between June 4 and 6, bearing a margin of error of ±2.4 percentage points.
