Waffle House adding surcharge for every egg ordered

(Nexstar) -Waffle House Restaurants nationwide add 50 cents to all eggs in prices soaring due to inflation and bird flu.

According to a waffle house memo shared with NEXSTAR, an additional charge was enforced on Monday.

“The continuous shortage of eggs caused by HPAI (bird flu) caused dramatic rise in egg prices,” he reads. “Consumers and restaurants have been forced to make difficult decisions. On February 3, Waffle House implemented a temporary .50 in all menus for each egg.”

In the memo, the waffle house intends to raise the price of the price, which is an “temporary target additional charge linked to an unprecedented rise in egg prices”, but indicates when additional charges will decrease. He said not.

“I hope these prices will be short -lived, but we can't predict how long this shortage will last,” he said.

The representatives of the Waffle House did not find out how extra charge would be transmitted to customers in the store. Photos posted on social media seem to indicate that some operators have posted notifications to windows or menus.

Egg prices in the United States are much more expensive than 2024. The recent data of the Labor Bureau has shown an increase of almost 40 % since January 2024. Agricultural sector predicts that this year's price will rise by further by further increase.

The occurrence of bird flu, which began in 2022, is to accuse the rapid rise in egg prices. When a virus is found on a poultry farm, the whole flock is slaughtered and helps to limit the spread of viruses. In addition, large egg farms contain more than 1 million chickens on a daily basis, which can cause a small infection of the supply crunch.

The problem tends to remain because it takes several months to dispose of all corpses, disinfect the barn, and bring new birds.

“Hopefully, the chicken begins to develop some kinds of natural immunity to bird flu, but we haven't seen it yet. It takes years to happen.” I told Nexstar on the month.

Penfield also believes that the price will continue to rise, and we believe that it will exceed the average national average price ($ 4.82 per dozen) set in 2023.
