Walmart Giving Employees Body Cameras to Increase Safety

Walmart is reportedly equipping some employees with body cameras as a safety measure.

According to CBNC, the move is part of a pilot program being implemented in select stores across the United States. reported It noted on Tuesday that it was not clear how many stores would participate during the Christmas season.

However, some stores have signs posted at their entrances that say “Born Body Cameras in Use,” according to witnesses and images shared online.

In June, Breitbart News reported that TJ Maxx's parent company was giving employees body cameras to deter shoplifting.

“While we do not discuss the specifics of our security measures, we are always looking at new and innovative technologies being used across the retail industry,” a Walmart spokesperson said, according to the CNBC article. This is a pilot we are testing in one market and will evaluate the results before making any long-term decisions. ”

Walmart is copying small retailers that have introduced body cameras in their stores. Walmart reportedly wants to use the device to keep its employees safe. The CNBC report continued:

In a document titled “Providing superior customer service while creating a safer environment,” staff members are required to use the device, according to a photo of the document posted on an online forum for Walmart employees and customers. They say they are being taught how to do it. It instructs employees to “record any escalating customer interactions” and to not wear their devices in employee break areas or restrooms. After an incident occurs, staff are directed to speak with another team member, who will help record the event in an “ethics and compliance app,” the document said.

In October 2023, a Walmart employee complained of additional “safety concerns” related to an encounter with a shoplifter, Breitbart News reported at the time. Months later, the store announced that the retailer was rethinking its self-checkout system following theft incidents plaguing the industry.
