Walmart announced Monday that it is pulling back from its diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, becoming the latest example of an American company retreating from its “woke” corporate policies.
Walmart said it would remove Sexual and transgender products were reportedly marketed to children, and funding for LGBTQI+ events will be reviewed to avoid funding sexual content targeted at children . Walmart said it plans to continue supporting Pride parades.
The retail giant will no longer participate in the Human Rights Campaign Corporate Equality Index.
The company said these changes have been in the works for years and were not the result of conversations with conservative anti-DEI activist Robbie Starbuck.
Walmart said it has removed some products that violate its policies, including chest binders sold to children, a product meant to flatten the chest. The company has decided not to continue the Center for Racial Equity, which it launched as a five-year initiative in 2020, and will no longer use terms such as “LatinX” and “DEI” in its corporate communications. Walmart's communications will instead focus on using terms like “belonging” to all employees and customers.
Walmart told Fox Business that it is “ready to change alongside our employees and customers across the nation.”
“We're on a journey and we know we're not perfect, but every decision we make fosters a sense of belonging and opens doors of opportunity for every employee, customer and supplier, and we strive to help Walmart “It comes from the idea that we want to be for everyone,” the company's statement continued.
This is the latest corporate retreat from politicized corporate policy.
In October, Toyota announced it would no longer sponsor LGBTQ parades and events and would no longer make efforts to promote DEI.
The automaker will no longer participate in the Human Rights Campaign's Corporate Equality Index or other corporate surveys.
A number of other large companies have also dropped out of the Human Rights Campaign's Corporate Equality Index, including Harley-Davidson, Lowe's, Ford Motor Co., Tractor Supply and Jack Daniel's.
Jobs Creators Network CEO Alfredo Ortiz said in a statement Tuesday:
The defeat of woke capitalism shows the power conservative groups have when we work together with one voice. Walmart's repeal of DEI is a stunning reversal from years ago, when companies seemed to be putting woke political interests ahead of business, threatening shareholders and employees. Conservatives should take this strategy that defeated woke capitalism and use it to win other policies.
Many of America's largest companies have abandoned DEI and other “woke” policies as Americans increasingly reject corporate politicized agendas.
The share of American workers who think DEI is a “good thing” has declined since last year, according to a Pew Research survey. Another Pew Research survey found that 36 percent of Americans believe DEI hurts white men.
In a similar poll, revealed Americans are increasingly shying away from companies with political leanings.
A July Rasmussen poll found that 48 percent of Americans believe DEI programs discriminate against white men, and an August Gallup poll found that Americans are influenced by current events in politics. It has become clear that we are becoming increasingly fed up with companies that give away.
said Daniel Cameron, former Kentucky attorney general and CEO of 1792 Exchange. Breitbart News Daily Listeners are “paying attention,” and thanks to some “brave and courageous” CEOs, “we're going to bring CEOs back to neutrality.”
