US UN Ambassador Michael Waltz’s Plans
Michael Waltz, the newly confirmed US ambassador to the United Nations, is set on a mission focused on tackling anti-Semitism and shaking up various UN programs. He’s advocating for a more assertive approach in areas such as communications, aviation, and space exploration.
A retired colonel from the Army National Guard and ex-Green Beret, Waltz has previously served as a House Republican from Florida and was a national security adviser under Trump. His confirmation came after a long hiatus of nearly nine months without a representative at the UN, right before the UN General Assembly commenced.
According to an insider, Waltz aims to reform the UN by “cleaning up awakened nonsense” that has crept in, similar to other government bodies. This includes reevaluating the climate-focused agency within the UN to align better with what he sees as its essential mission.
Waltz believes that the UN should be a platform for global dialogue and conflict resolution. “President Trump is the president of peace,” noted a source familiar with his agenda, adding that it’s essential to return to the core objectives of the UN—uniting countries to avert wars.
Waltz is also determined to eradicate anti-Semitism within UN framework discussions. He promises that the US will stand firm on protecting “every inch” of NATO territory, especially after a recent incident where a Russian jet encroached upon Estonian airspace.
Furthermore, he plans to adopt a more aggressive stance toward international organizations that influence American businesses. The source pointed out that countries like China are taking a strong approach in sectors such as aviation and space, suggesting that the US needs to pick up the pace.
During his confirmation hearing, Waltz expressed the importance of having a single place where various nations can gather for discussion. However, he argued that the UN has strayed from its primary mission of maintaining peace over the decades since its inception.
On his first day at the UN, he reiterated the commitment to NATO allies, emphasizing that any violations of NATO airspace would not be taken lightly, particularly in light of the recent Russian aircraft incident that reignited concerns about security in the region.
