Walz ignites anger by likening Trump’s immigration policies to a ‘modern-day Gestapo’

Tim Waltz Sparks Controversy with Comments on Trump’s Immigration Policy

This past weekend, Tim Waltz, the former Democratic Vice Presidential candidate and Minnesota Governor, ignited a social media firestorm. His remarks at the University of Minnesota Law School included a sharp critique of President Donald Trump’s immigration policy, which he likened to Nazi practices.

“Maybe some folks think this is too political for an opening speech,” Waltz said to students. “But I believe it’s my duty to speak out.” He described Trump’s administration as a “modern Gestapo,” claiming they were detaining individuals without proper process, often in unmarked vehicles, and taking them to unknown locations without allowing them to contact loved ones.

He didn’t hold back, labeling Trump a “tyrant” and warning the audience of a “real emergency” unfolding in the nation.

Backlash from Conservatives

Waltz’s statements triggered strong reactions from conservative circles, including leaders from the Trump administration who criticized the comparison between current deportation efforts and the Nazi regime’s secret police. Stephen Miller, a Deputy Chief of Staff, condemned the language as “anti-American” and potentially inciting violence.

The official Homeland Security account responded as well, expressing frustration over the portrayal of ICE agents and citing a significant rise in attacks against them. They stressed a clear message: illegal entry into the U.S. would result in arrest.

Critics Highlight Waltz’s Record

Republican candidates running against Waltz have also seized the opportunity to question his governance. Kendall Qualls, a challenger, pointed to Waltz’s previous lockdown measures during the pandemic, accusing him of being a tyrant and similarly labeling him as a “modern Gestapo.”

This criticism somewhat reflects back on Waltz, who previously faced backlash for likening Trump’s administration to Nazi forces. In the past, the Biden White House had expressed discontent when Trump used the term “Gestapo” in closed meetings, calling it dehumanizing.

Waltz’s office has been contacted for comments on the fallout from his recent remarks. He previously noted that his selection as Vice President was due to his ability to connect with a diverse audience, which had also drawn skepticism.
