Warren Buffett halts large donation to the Gates Foundation during Epstein inquiry

Buffett Delays Donations Amid Epstein Investigation

The repercussions from the Epstein files are shaking up high society, prompting a surprising shift from one of the wealthiest individuals globally.

A recent report from the Wall Street Journal unveiled that Warren Buffett, the Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, has decided to postpone his regular mid-year contribution to the Gates Foundation while an inquiry into its connections to Jeffrey Epstein unfolds.

At 95, Buffett revealed his aim to continue allocating stock from Berkshire Hathaway to foundations linked to his family but did not include the Gates Foundation in his announcements. Historically, this foundation has received significant stock donations around this time each year.

In 2025, for instance, he had planned to donate 9 million shares to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. However, this year marks a notable change in fortune for those remaining shares.

Buffett intends to redistribute 9 million shares to the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, with 1 million shares each directed to the Sherwood Foundation, Howard G. Buffett Foundation, and Novo Foundation.

A representative for the Gates Foundation expressed gratitude for Buffett’s long-standing support, emphasizing that his contributions of over $47 billion have been instrumental in fulfilling the Foundation’s mission globally. Backed by Bill Gates’ substantial commitment, the Foundation plans to continue its work through 2045 from a solid financial foundation.

“Regrettably, as our children grow older,” Buffett remarked, stating he hopes to donate the remainder of his shares by the end of 2034. He elaborated on his goal to increase yearly grants to the three foundations overseen by his children and boost the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation’s contributions at a slightly higher rate.

Buffett had previously disclosed his intention in 2006 to give away a substantial portion of his wealth. Annual donations to the Gates Foundation have been part of that commitment, although following Gates’ passing in 2024, Buffett indicated he would stop those donations. This latest situation could fast-track that decision unless things change after the investigations conclude.

According to the Associated Press, Buffett noted he hadn’t been in touch with Gates for several months before the public release of the Epstein files in fall 2025. He expressed surprise over the large number of affluent and influential individuals involved in the Epstein scandal, suggesting a remarkable reach.

In April, the Gates Foundation announced it would be investigating its ties to Epstein, with an update expected this summer.
