Washington state trooper fatally shoots a man during a freeway altercation, police say

A Washington state trooper shot and killed a man with a hammer after he attacked a state Department of Transportation employee along Interstate 5 north of Seattle, law enforcement officials said.

State Patrol troopers responded to a report of a road rage incident on the northbound shoulder of Interstate 5 in Everett around 4 p.m. Thursday, the Snohomish County Multi-Agency Response Team said in a news release. The team investigates incidents of use of force by police.

Investigators said the driver of the vehicle began ramming a Department of Transportation contractor vehicle that was operating a lift in the swamp with two contractors on board.

The driver was armed with a hammer, and during an altercation between workers and officers, officers shot and killed the driver, according to a news release. The driver died at the scene despite assistance from law enforcement, according to a news release.

The names of the officer and the person shot have not been released. The Snohomish County Coroner’s Office will confirm the driver’s identity, cause and manner of death.

It is unclear exactly what led to the shooting, how many shots were fired, or why the driver began ramming the vehicle.

The incident caused traffic to be backed up for miles into the night.
