A Charlotte County, Fla., sheriff’s deputy saved the life of a 6-month-old infant who was trapped in the back seat of his mother’s car after being hit by a motorcycle traveling more than 100 miles per hour, according to the sheriff’s office. .

After witnessing the Feb. 8 crash, Deputy Sgt. Dave Musgrove got out of his vehicle and rushed to the scene, the office said in a release Friday.

According to the sheriff’s office, part of the car the baby was in was so badly damaged that it was difficult to remove the car seat, forcing the deputy to seek help from bystanders.

After being removed from the car and car seat, the baby had no pulse and appeared not to be breathing.

Musgrove called paramedics and began CPR on the baby, but the mother became distraught and cried out, “Are you alive?”

After performing several chest compressions, Musgrove told the mother, “I could just hear her breathing.”

When paramedics arrived, they told Musgrove they had detected a pulse and the baby was taken to the hospital.

“Sergeant Musgrove’s actions are to be commended,” Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Plummell said in a statement.

“His calm and calm demeanor at the scene of chaos and tragedy ultimately saved the life of a beautiful child. To the bystanders who came to his aid so he could focus on the baby’s immediate needs. I would like to thank you as well,” said Plummel. Added. “This was a senseless accident that claimed one life, but if Dave hadn’t been at the scene, it could have been two. The sheriff’s office said the baby has a “long road to recovery” but is “alive,” adding that the mother and the other child are “doing well.”
