Watchdog finds 81% of all political late night show jokes in 2023 targeted conservatives

A new study from the Media Research Center found that 81% of all political jokes told on major late-night comedy shows in 2023 were targeted at conservatives.

The media watchdog analyzed 9,518 political jokes told during each of the six major daily late-night shows from January 3 to December 22, 2023, of which 7,729 It was discovered that it was targeted at “someone or something on the right.” ”

Upon further analysis of the data, the watchdog group found that some programs were more offensive toward right-wing themes than others. Kimmel's show had the highest percentage of anti-conservative jokes among the six shows.

Of the 2,215 political jokes made on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” 1,960, or 88%, were directed at conservatives. Of the politicians Kimmel criticized, 94 were on the right and only 37 on the left, 11 of which were targeted at independents.

Kimmel cursed former President Trump 762 times and President Biden 164 times, but Vice President Kamala Harris was only teased once. He joked about President Trump's three oldest children a total of 101 times, compared to nine times he attacked Hunter Biden.

Colbert's show came in second overall for jokes criticizing the right wing. Of the 1,918 total jokes, 1,655 jokes criticized conservatives, or 86%.

Only 219 jokes about Colbert were directed at leftists, and 18 were directed at independents. The late-night show host made fun of both Trump (385 people) and former Rep. George Santos (262 people) more than twice as much as Biden (119 people), but Harris once again made fun of herself. I only received one joke.

Hunter was the target of the same number of jokes as Ivanka, but the Trump brothers cracked an additional 40 combined.

Regarding the various guest hosts on “The Daily Show,” MRC calculated that the most anti-conservative was actor and liberal activist John Leguizamo. Leguizamo told 66 political jokes while hosting the show, 65 of which criticized right-wing topics.

Fallon's NBC show came in at No. 5 on MRC's list. The hosts told 1,416 political jokes, of which 929 (66%) criticized conservatives. When it came to mocking conservative figures, Fallon was even more polarizing than his late-night colleagues.

“Fallon mocked 196 unique targets, 103 of whom were right-wing, 85 left-wing, and 18 independent,” the watchdog said.

James Corden's CBS show, which lasted just four months into the year, rounded out the list with 134 of its 245 political jokes (54%) aimed at conservatives.
