‘We Are Willing to Die on That Hill’

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) appeared on FBN's “Evening Edit” and announced his intention to shut down the federal government to force the Biden administration to take action at the southern border.

Johnson said his caucus is “going to die on that hill.”

“Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said we are getting everything we want in non-defense spending and there are no spending cuts, and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene said we are getting everything we want in non-defense spending, and there are no cuts in spending. “Biden's political opponents and innocent American citizens,” host Elizabeth MacDonald said. “What do you think about those criticisms?”

“Well, listen, Chuck Schumer is going to do his best to spin, but this is not what they wanted to do,” Johnson responded. “In fact, this equates to a $30 billion reduction in what the Senate wrote in its budget bill that it wanted to spend. So this is important. We recovered some of that $6.1 billion, another $10 billion from funds that were set aside by the IRS, so that's a total of $20 billion. That's a huge savings for the people. Again, It wasn’t everything we wanted.”

“Marjorie is not wrong,” he continued. “The border is on fire. You know, Liz, I took a group of 64 members on a trip there last week, and what we saw was heartbreaking and upsetting. I'm going to die on a hill. The appropriations process is meant to make sure our military gets paid and continues to fund the federal government so that it functions, and while we're at it, we is fighting a serious fight to secure our borders, and we are insisting on it. We have been since the day we got the gavel, and nothing has changed.”
