Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on CNN's “Smerconish” on Saturday that if we don't tighten regulations on social media content, we will “lose complete control.”
“We need national action, but sadly Congress is dysfunctional when it comes to addressing these threats to our children,” Clinton said. So you're completely right. This should be at the top of any legislative and political agenda. There must be a lot of work to be done. In my opinion, we should repeal something called Section 230. This clause gave immunity to platforms on the internet, as it was believed that they were mere pass-throughs and therefore should not be judged by the content posted. But now we know that was too simplistic a view. If we don't manage and monitor our content, whether it's Facebook, Twitter, X, Instagram, TikTok, whatever the platform is, we lose total control, but that's not the case. If you just think about the social and psychological effects, it's real harm, and it's very dangerous, including child pornography and threats of violence. ”
She added: “If you remove immunity, you need guardrails, you need regulation. We did a massive experiment on ourselves, especially on children, and we have the proof. I think we need to do more and remove cell phones from schools. I'm so happy to see schools starting to hand in cell phones when children walk in the door. Masu.”
