Ezra Klein Discusses Biden’s Health and Media Coverage
On a recent podcast, New York Times columnist Ezra Klein expressed that mainstream media struggles to confirm the state of former President Joe Biden’s health during his presidency. This comes after CNN anchor Jake Tupper and reporter Alex Thompson discussed what they termed the “original crime.”
Tupper highlighted how mainstream media had faced criticism for not adequately covering Biden’s deterioration. Klein, on the other hand, defended the press, mentioning that various factors obstructed sources from speaking out. He mentioned the challenges involved in gathering evidence for such a story.
For years, corporate media appeared to downplay concerns regarding Biden’s health, especially ahead of the upcoming debate against former President Donald Trump in June 2024. Questions about his health have lingered since the 2020 campaign. In a November 2020 piece, the NYT urged readers not to worry about Biden’s age, arguing that his experience was what was needed.
Klein noted the prevalence of discussions surrounding Biden’s well-being, remarking, “I’m not burdened by typical ‘sleepy Joe’ stereotypes, but I do wonder what the lapses in memory say about potential issues.”
Special Advisor Robert Huar announced in February 2024 that Biden had mishandled classified documents. However, he opted not to press charges, describing Biden as “a sympathetic and well-meaning older man.” Major media outlets, including the NYT, have supported Biden’s clarity and framed critiques as politically motivated.
On the other hand, some hosts, like Chris Cuomo from News Nation, argue that the reluctance of media to address Biden’s observable decline is not due to ignorance but rather a strategic choice to avoid undermining his potential to defeat Trump.
