Wegmans Issues Recall for Semi-Sweet Chocolate Non-Pareils
There’s been a recall on Wegmans’ semi-sweet chocolate non-pareils due to undeclared allergens, specifically milk, which weren’t listed on the packaging. This was reported in an alert from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released on Monday.
The recall was initiated by Mellace Family Brands California Inc. and affects locations in eight states: Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, according to FDA announcements.
If you’re looking for specifics, the recalled candy tubs have lot codes 55021, 55031, 55491, 55501, 56061, and 56071. Each has a different set of dates associated with the lot code, which can be checked on the Grokelly Store Chain website.
Wegmans has stated that customers can return the affected non-pareils to the customer service desk for a full refund.
It turns out that the lack of a clear label about the milk presence was due to a temporary glitch in the supplier’s manufacturing process. The Mellace family brands pointed this out in the FDA alert.
Milk is classified as one of the major allergens by the FDA, which also mandates that food items containing milk must be clearly labeled, alongside other allergens like eggs, fish, and peanuts.
According to the FDA, eating the recalled Wegmans products poses a serious risk, especially for individuals allergic to or sensitive to milk.
So far, there haven’t been any reported illnesses linked to Wegmans’ non-pareils.
The grocery chain, which operates over 110 stores along the East Coast, has plans to open its first Connecticut location in Norwalk at the end of July.
