As of earlier today, West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey has retracted his initial comments about the shooting of two National Guard members in Washington, D.C. He mentioned he had been receiving “conflicting reports” regarding their condition.

Update – 12:40 PM – Sadly, news has emerged confirming that the two soldiers have died from their injuries. Governor Morrisey expressed his condolences and emphasized the gravity of the situation.

“Today, we are deeply saddened to confirm that two West Virginia National Guard members shot in Washington, D.C., have succumbed to their injuries. These brave West Virginians died serving their country. We are in continued contact with federal authorities as the investigation unfolds. The entire state grieves with their families and the National Guard community. West Virginia will never forget their service and sacrifice, and we demand full accountability for this horrific act,” Morrisey stated.

So far, authorities have not disclosed the names of the victims or any details about those in custody.

In addition, a civilian caught up in the incident remains in critical condition after being taken to a trauma center, according to a spokesperson for DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services.

The shooting happened at the intersection of Northwest 17th Avenue and Eye Street, close to the Farragut West subway station and just a few blocks from the White House. Reports indicate that a Guardsman may have confronted the suspect prior to being injured.

The suspect, who was also wounded in the incident, was apprehended and has been taken away from the scene on a stretcher.

Although the lockdown at the White House has been lifted and the temporary halt at Reagan National Airport is over, several nearby roads including parts of Connecticut Avenue and K Street remain closed. Officials have reassured the public that the area is secure but advised them to steer clear while the investigation is ongoing.
