It can also intercept and record phone calls (if given the appropriate permissions), activate the device’s camera to take photos, and turn it into a surveillance tool.

How does the cyber espionage tool VajraSpy RAT infiltrate Android devices?
VajraSpy invades unsuspecting victims’ devices via malicious apps. When the RAT was first discovered, it was present on apps found on Google Play between April 1, 2021 and September 10, 2023.
ESET researchers discovered the campaign report when running Patchwork APT in 2022. The hacker group, which has been around since 2015 and primarily targets people in Pakistan, exposed its activities after unintentionally infecting their infrastructure with another RAT they were experimenting with.
When this was leaked and VajraSpy was discovered, the infected apps on Google Play were removed. However, they can still be found in third-party apps, and some are still distributed on Google Play.

VajraSpy has primarily been masquerading within news and messaging apps on Android. Apps known to researchers include:

Google Play Protect protects you by automatically removing apps that are known to contain this malware on Android devices with Google Play services. However, it’s important to note that Google Play Protect alone may not be enough. Historically, it has not been 100% foolproof in removing all known malware from Android devices. If for some reason these apps still appear on your phone, be sure to uninstall them manually.
