White Sox Fan Pope Leo XIV Gets a Cheeky Shoutout
During a recent gathering, a Chicago Cubs fan playfully shouted “Go Cubs!” at Pope Leo XIV. The moment, shared by Vatican media, highlighted the longtime White Sox allegiance of the Pope, which he couldn’t help but show in his reaction.
Amidst cheers and excitement, the Pope responded in Spanish, exclaiming, “Han Perdido!” which means “They lost!” This remark came after the Cubs’ season ended following an NLDS game against the Milwaukee Brewers, who unfortunately fell short in the postseason.
The Cubs had a more successful season compared to the White Sox, finishing with a commendable 92 wins. In contrast, the White Sox struggled significantly, racking up 102 losses. It’s worth noting that when Robert Francis Prevost was named the first American pope, speculation arose about his baseball loyalties. Initially, the Cubs were touted as his team, but his brother later clarified that he’s a die-hard White Sox fan.
In response to the earlier shout, John’s brother pointed out on radio, “Whoever said Cubs on the radio was wrong; Socks.” To support this, a video surfaced showing the Pope at the 2005 World Series where the Sox played against the Houston Astros. Just last June, the Pope was seen sporting a White Sox hat. Seems like, despite his high office, the fan spirit firmly remains.
So, while there are many instances where a figure like the Pope must navigate complex beliefs, his enduring support for the White Sox doesn’t seem to waver. It adds a layer of personality to his public persona—one that fans can certainly appreciate.
