“Destroying democracy” has become a popular phrase among some on the left, but its meaning seems pretty fluid. One way to interpret it could be, well, manipulating time-honored institutions for immediate political gain.
So, who has mentioned packing the Supreme Court, which has been around for 156 years? And who talks about dismantling the Senate filibuster, but only when it benefits them politically?
What about those wanting to admit financially troubled Puerto Rico as a state, alongside a redefined District of Columbia, specifically to gain four extra liberal senators? This is all happening in the context of altering the Constitution.
Is attempting to sidestep the Electoral College through something like “The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact” another form of attacking democracy?
And doesn’t weaponizing the federal government against political opponents also count as a form of destruction? I mean, who instructed the CIA to fabricate claims of “collusion” to undermine Donald Trump during his 2016 campaign and into his presidency?
Who rallied a group of over 50 former intelligence officials to mislead the public right before the last debate of the 2020 election, claiming that the Hunter Biden laptop was merely a “Russian operation”?
And which leaders directed the FBI to collaborate with social media platforms to suppress news that could negatively affect the Biden campaign?
Who managed, arguably, the most unprecedented political maneuver in history by using shadows to control President Biden and then essentially sidelined his reelection campaign before appointing Kamala Harris, who didn’t even win a primary delegate?
Who sent FBI SWAT teams to raid a former president’s home over a dispute involving just 102 out of 13,000 classified files?
What about attempts to keep a former president off the ballots in multiple states, stripping millions of their right to vote?
Who synchronized local, state, and federal prosecutors to bring forth charges against a former president that have never been seen before?
And, really, which Democrats have the distinction of impeaching a president twice?
Has any party ever attempted to hold a trial for an ex-president who is now just a private citizen?
When have there been two close assassination attempts on a leading candidate in the same election cycle?
Who has essentially dismantled the southern border and allowed millions of undocumented immigrants to enter without any criminal or health checks?
Who established 600 “sanctuary jurisdictions” to negate federal immigration laws, echoing actions from the old Confederacy?
And let’s not forget about the unrest in 2020, where thousands of rioters caused billions in damages and even resulted in deaths—all seemingly without major repercussions.
How do those accused of destroying democracy maintain such high approval ratings on many critical issues while their opponents falter in public opinion?
How can a party “destroy democracy” when they’ve won both the popular and Electoral College votes, secured majorities in both Senate and House, and control the Supreme Court through appointments?
So, what’s driving these extravagant accusations?
Three key factors: first, the Democratic Party appears increasingly out of touch, having alienated the middle classes and consequently losing control over Congress, the presidency, and the Supreme Court.
Second, despite dipping poll numbers, they seem intent on further distancing themselves from their traditional base—minorities, young voters, and Independents.
Finally, they seem unable to identify any supportive issues or charismatic leaders that could resonate with the public.
So, it makes sense that in this state of panic, Democrats would lash out, recognizing that their radical agenda may be backfiring. However, like those struggling with addiction, they seem more inclined to cling to their self-destructive tendencies.
