Who is the naturalized American citizen from Lebanon named as the Michigan synagogue school attacker?

Recent Attack in Michigan and Virginia Schools Raises Concerns

On Thursday, shortly after an extremist yelled “Allah Akbar” and opened fire in a classroom at Old Dominion University, there was a disturbing incident where armed individuals entered a synagogue and school in the Detroit area, engaging in a shootout with security personnel.

The assailant was killed in the exchange, while one security guard sustained injuries.

“Today’s attack is every community’s worst nightmare,” a local leader stated.

Temple Israel, a Reform synagogue in West Bloomfield Township with about 12,000 members, has facilities that include a preschool and a religious education school. A statement released indicated that “everyone is safe,” pointing to the well-being of both the preschool children and the staff.

According to Temple Israel’s statement, “We faced a terrorist gunman today who was met with our nation’s security forces, who are true heroes. Our educators acted swiftly to keep our children safe and calm.” Notably, they had conducted active shooter training just six weeks prior.

The Department of Homeland Security has revealed that the vehicle involved in the attack belonged to a naturalized American resident from Dearborn, Michigan. The assailant has been identified as Ayman Mohammad Ghazali, a 41-year-old from Lebanon who immigrated to the United States in 2011 on a spouse visa.

Interestingly, Ghazali was granted American citizenship under the Obama administration in February 2016, just a year after he applied for it. A neighbor mentioned that Ghazali lived in Dearborn Heights and had recently lost family members due to an Israeli military operation in Lebanon.

Detroit Heights Mayor Mo Beydoun quickly condemned the attack, revealing that Ghazali had lost several relatives, including nieces and nephews, in the recent conflict. Local reports indicate that Ghazali’s adult brothers, believed to have connections to Hezbollah, were also among those killed in Israeli airstrikes.

As of a recent report, Lebanese officials claim that over 687 individuals, including 98 children, have died in Israeli attacks since late February.

Speaking on the incident, Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard reflected, “There are times we question why such events occur. However, we must determine reasons through thorough investigation rather than assumptions.”

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer emphasized the weight of the attack, stating, “Today’s assault embodies the nightmare so many communities fear. We witnessed incredible actions that saved lives and halted the assailant’s progress. The state is thankful to the security teams and law enforcement who acted bravely.”

The West Bloomfield police noted that they’re collaborating with the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police, and other agencies to probe the situation further.
