Whoopi Goldberg warns Democrats to ‘get things done’ after midterm wins

Whoopi Goldberg, co-host of “The View,” urged Democrats on Wednesday to focus on their responsibilities after winning control of both the House and Senate.

“We put you in to take care of business,” Goldberg said. She added that voters did not want to hear about internal party disputes and that Democrats could argue among themselves after addressing the public’s needs.

Democrats won majorities in both chambers in Tuesday’s midterm elections. They are set to take control in January 2027.

The co-hosts also spoke with Texas Sen.-elect James Talarico, who defeated a Republican incumbent. Talarico said he hoped to work with President Donald Trump and lawmakers from both parties on relief for Texans facing high costs.

One proposal, he said, would be to temporarily suspend federal taxes on gasoline and diesel. That could lower gas prices by 18 cents per gallon, he said, offering families immediate help at the pump.

Talarico acknowledged that suspending the taxes would not solve the broader affordability problem. He said prices would not come down fully until the war in Iran ended, but argued the tax change could provide short-term support for working families.

At the end of the interview, Goldberg congratulated Talarico, saying the co-hosts were thrilled by his victory and that he belonged in the Senate.

Nicholas Fondacaro, an associate editor at the Media Research Center’s NewsBusters, criticized Goldberg’s remarks. He said they suggested the program was designed to promote Democratic candidates and influence elections.

Fondacaro also said “The View” had encouraged viewers in the weeks before the midterms to vote for Democrats and specific candidates, including Talarico. He argued that such activity could violate federal rules governing broadcast licensees, and said the comments might be cited in any future action by the Federal Communications Commission. ABC did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Talarico had also said he was open to working with Trump in an interview released Monday on “The Diary of a CEO” podcast. He said he wanted to help deliver on what he described as MAGA’s promise to make government work for people who had been overlooked.

“There’s still time to do that,” he said.

Last month, “The View” co-hosts backed former Vice President Kamala Harris’s view that Democrats should not make impeaching Trump a priority if they took control of Congress.

Sunny Hostin said impeachment should not be on the agenda. She pointed to House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries’s proposed plans for the first 100 days and first 100 hours, which she said included tax credits, limits on Immigration and Customs Enforcement, restrictions on stock trading and reversing some of Trump’s unpopular policies.

Co-host Ana Navarro also opposed impeachment, saying Democrats would have limited options while Trump remained in the White House.
