Rep. Scott Perry (R-Pennsylvania) on Wednesday accused Secretary of State Antony Blinken of imposing conditions on Israel that the Biden administration has not imposed on Ukraine, even though both were attacked without provocation. He demanded to know why he was there.
Ukraine is restricted from using some American weapons. For example, they cannot be used to attack Russian territory ( disappointment hawkish organizations such as the Atlantic Council)
But as Perry pointed out while questioning Blinken before the House Foreign Affairs Committee, the Biden administration is withholding weapons from Israel to thwart Israeli attacks on Hamas in Rafah.
Rafah is a city in southern Gaza where Hamas concentrated its last battalion. It is also a strategic location that controls access to Egypt’s borders. Israel believes it is the key to victory against Hamas.
But Blinken and the Biden administration have argued for months that an attack on Rafah poses too great a risk to civilians. Blinken reiterated Wednesday that there are other ways to eliminate Hamas, but did not provide details.
Perry noted that the Biden administration has been pushing the Israeli government to present a comprehensive plan for post-war Gaza.
However, he said the administration has made no such demands on Ukraine regarding territory liberated from Russian control. Blinken claimed to have laid out his plan in recent talks. speech In Ukraine (focused on democracy and reform)
But, as Perry pointed out, Blinken did not provide details of that plan to Congress.
