With the 'Epstein list,' Trump is caught in his own conspiracy theory trap.

Living by conspiracy theory often leads to getting trapped by it. So, it’s not surprising that President Trump and his administration find themselves in a tricky spot, having to act more maturely while addressing their base. Judging by his frustrated demeanor, it’s clear that Trump loathes this role.

During a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, Attorney General Pam Bondy brought up the Department of Justice’s assertion that Jeffrey Epstein’s death was a suicide and awkwardly noted the absence of any “client list.” An obviously irked Trump responded, “Are we still on this topic? This guy’s been talked about for years. We’ve got serious floods in Texas. Why are we fixating on this creep?”

Indeed, here’s a man who has crafted an entire political career spinning tales about the elite and its supposed atrocities. Yet, Trump seems eager to pivot the conversation toward more pressing matters.

The irony is palpable. It’s not that he has a sadistic obsession with Epstein’s “client list.” It’s more like stepping into a trap of his own making.

Trump’s rise has been fueled by manipulated delusions. His initial foray into presidential politics was marked by a racist conspiracy about former President Barack Obama. Following that, he eagerly embraced shadowy narratives about pedophile rings and sex trafficking cabals, attracting the support of various conspiracy theorists.

Many believe the release of Epstein’s “List” would expose a hidden elite controlling global events since time began. There’s an illusion that if Trump were to retake power in 2024, he would imprison these so-called globalists and redeem an innocent society.

However, what we actually got was Bondy, who had previously claimed to have a file “sitting on my desk” but now seems to conveniently forget its existence.

This raises questions: Which Bondy is being misleading? The one on Fox News asserting she had access to the list, or the one in the Cabinet meeting who claims to have never seen it?

Then there’s Elon Musk, the world’s richest individual and once a fervent Trump supporter, who, not too long ago, tweeted that Trump was on Epstein’s client list before hastily deleting that post.

Was Musk being dishonest? Is Trump really implicated? These questions may be simple to ponder, but they seem tough for Trump’s supporters to navigate. Either Bondy or Musk has been misleading (and perhaps deserves reprimand), or Trump could be guilty of serious misconduct.

Connecting these dots isn’t far-fetched, so why do some continue to follow such narratives? There seems to be a blindness to clear contradictions.

Democrats might need to step in to help make these connections clearer. While not every Democrat should lean into conspiracy theories, having a vocal critic who encourages questioning—like many of Trump’s followers—might raise awareness.

After all, Trump and Epstein have shared some moments, and there are several instances where Trump has commented positively on Epstein.

How complicated should this really be?

Most Americans are somewhat receptive to conspiracy theories. Many Republicans, for example, were vocal about Epstein until the narrative shifted and former President Bill Clinton became noticeably quiet.

To be fair, some conspiracy theorists—like Alex Jones—have claimed Trump is not revealing everything. However, many have simply concocted elaborate justifications for why Trump remains innocent or how others are being shielded by him.

In a rational world, such cover-ups would be outrageous and disqualifying.

But we don’t live in a rational world. This is a place where those who suggested Trump would ignite World War III remain eager to defend him.

Whether Trump’s name is on a “list” (which may not even exist) is somewhat secondary. The main point—and what the Trump administration hopes you overlook—is that yet again, a powerful figure might be deceiving you. As usual.
