WNBA Commissioner Responds to Recent Controversy
WNBA Commissioner Kathy Engelbert recently addressed comments attributed to her by player Nafisa Collier. Engelbert, during a press conference, mentioned that Collier expressed gratitude for the league’s platform, noting that without it, players might not earn significant incomes. “I think what she’s highlighting is the importance of the media rights deal,” Engelbert said.
During the press event, Engelbert stated that she never made the comments purportedly attributed to her. “I didn’t say those things. Kaitlyn Clark has been a phenomenal player and representative for this league, bringing millions of new fans onboard,” she emphasized.
Collier also commented that Engelbert should believe players should “be on their knees, thanking the stars” for the media rights deal she secured. Engelbert responded, admitting that there were many inaccuracies in the media but didn’t specifically deny any of Collier’s claims about her. “There’s a lot of misinformation circulating on social media and in reports,” she explained, suggesting misinterpretations of her statements.
Engelbert expressed disappointment over the situation, sharing that she, too, is affected personally. “I’m human, I have a family, and my children are upset about all of this. It’s been a rough week,” she said. Yet, she acknowledged that if players feel unappreciated, efforts need to be made to change that perception. “It’s disheartening to hear players feel that they aren’t valued. If they feel less than worthy in this league, we certainly have to do better.” Engelbert’s comments came just before the WNBA Finals.
Currently, the league and the WNBA Players Association are in negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement, a critical step since the last agreement, made in 2020, is set to expire at the end of October.
