WNBA All-Stars Send Strong Message During CBA Talks
During Saturday’s All-Star Game, WNBA players showcased their feelings toward league officials through their warm-up shirts. One notable message read, “We pay us what you owe,” which, while striking, didn’t quite spark the anticipated social media buzz.
All the All-Stars, including Kate Linklark of the Indiana Fever, participated in wearing these shirts that also sported the Women’s National Basketball Players Association (WNBPA) logo alongside the statements.
Nneka Ogwumike, the WNBPA president, expressed her admiration for the players’ choice to utilize the platform for such messages. She remarked, “I’m very inspired by the number of players that appeared, the engagement there. That’s really what it is. The more that happens, the more we’ll be able to get things done.” It seems the intention is to leverage this moment into ongoing negotiations.
The players argue that since the league’s financial situation is improving, they are due for a pay increase. The WNBA is set to engage in a new $2.2 billion media rights deal next season, with plans to expand to 18 teams by 2030, which involves a hefty $250 million expansion fee from new franchises.
Despite challenges, WNBA Commissioner Kathy Engelbert remains hopeful. She stated, “I’m really optimistic that I can still accomplish something that transforms. And next year we’re an All-Star, and we’ll talk about how great everything is. Obviously, there’s a lot of hard work to do on both sides to get there.”
On another note, it’s interesting, but last year, the league reported a projected loss of $40 million for the 2024 season. The new rights deal is expected to boost revenues by at least $100 million compared to the previous agreement.
The current collective bargaining agreement is approaching its expiration date on October 31st, pushing the urgency for resolution in negotiations. So, it’ll be interesting to see how this all unfolds.
