A woman in Florida attempted to carjack a Good Samaritan who stopped to assist her after she crashed a stolen vehicle, according to officials.
Deputies from the Broward Sheriff’s Office received calls around 2:47 p.m. Friday about a hit-and-run incident near Northeast 54th Street and Federal Highway in Deerfield Beach, as reported by the local news.
They found that 44-year-old Roszetta Benjamin was driving a stolen car when she collided with three others, resulting in minor injuries for the occupants of those vehicles.
After that, she continued driving and was later involved in another collision at the intersection of North Federal Highway and Hillsboro Boulevard, with the other driver suffering non-life-threatening injuries.
As per investigators, a Good Samaritan came forward to help Benjamin, but she allegedly attempted to take his vehicle. Reports indicate that during their struggle, she managed to shift the car into drive which led to her crashing into a convenience store at a gas station.
A witness, Wade Anby Beau, an employee at the Mobile gas station, recalled hearing a loud crash and rushing to the scene. He noted that another driver also turned around to assist.
“We thought something might be wrong, like she was in shock or something like that,” Beau said, adding that her behavior was erratic. Photos from the aftermath showed her on the hood of the car after the crash.
Beau later mentioned that he spent two days cleaning up the aftermath inside the store, where drink coolers had been knocked over and glass was scattered everywhere. “It could have been serious, especially since people are always walking around here,” he commented.
Benjamin now faces charges including carjacking, kidnapping, grand theft, and hit-and-run, with her bond set at over $104,000 by a judge. As of Tuesday, she remained in custody, according to jail records.
