A Presidio, Texas, woman was arrested on charges of smuggling more than 700 pounds of banned Mexican bologna and more than 280 boxes of undeclared prescription drugs across the southern border.
The suspect, a 43-year-old American citizen, was arrested at the Presidio port of entry on Monday around 4 p.m., according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
According to CBP, she was driving a 2023 GMC Yukon from Mexico when she was stopped and initially declared only prepared meals for inspection.
CBP agricultural experts began a secondary inspection and found several suitcases in the vehicle that appeared to be heavier than expected.

When the expert opened the suitcase, he found several Mexican bologna rolls inside. A total of 40 rolls were found inside the suitcase, totaling 748 pounds of illegal meat.
Mexican bologna is made from pork and is prohibited because it can introduce exotic animal diseases to the U.S. pork industry, CBP said.
“We emphasize that it is important for travelers to educate themselves about what products they can legally bring in from abroad,” CBP Presidio Port Director Benito Reyes Jr. said in a statement. “Travelers should also declare all items they transport into the U.S. to avoid fines and penalties, even if they believe the item is allowed.”

“The concern with pork products is that they can introduce exotic animal diseases that could have a devastating impact on the U.S. economy and agricultural industry,” he continued.
More than 280 boxes containing undeclared medicines were also found hidden inside various panels of the vehicle. These drugs include tramadol, a Schedule IV controlled substance, as well as phentermina, alprazolam, clonazapam, diazapam, pharmapram, ampigran, and sulfamethoxazole.
