Tragic First Date Turns Fatal in Arizona

A first date that began through social media took a dark turn when 21-year-old Arianna Bailey Jones was found dead in a shallow grave in the Arizona desert. The man suspected of her murder, 24-year-old Domonic Rodrico, claims that two unknown men attacked them, causing her disappearance, according to police reports.

On Monday, Glendale police announced Rodrico’s arrest after what they believe to be Jones’ remains were discovered in a remote area north of Phoenix. He faces charges of first-degree premeditated murder.

The police expressed their condolences to Jones’ family in a Facebook post, where they hoped for “a different kind of closure” before detailing the arrest linked to her tragic case.

Rodrico and Jones reportedly met through social media and communicated online prior to their meeting in person, where they initially went to the movies. However, detectives believe that what seemed like a simple first date ended in tragedy in a secluded area.

When interrogated, Rodrico maintained that he fled after the supposed attack, claiming he was not responsible for her death. “He says they were in this remote area and two people showed up and attacked them,” said Jose Santiago, a spokesperson for Glendale police. “At some point, he fled, leaving Jones behind.”

Yet, investigators noted a significant amount of evidence, including physical, digital, and surveillance information that linked Rodrico to the crime. Despite his claims, police said his explanation changed multiple times during questioning, raising suspicion.

Santiago commented on the inconsistencies in Rodrico’s story and the fact that he never reported the alleged attack to law enforcement. “He never called the police or anyone else about the attack,” he said. Furthermore, Rodrico ominously suggested that Jones was “probably not alive” after the incident.

Surveillance footage revealed Rodrico cleaning the back seat of Jones’ car shortly after she disappeared, and he was also found with injuries consistent with stab wounds, which he attributed to an assailant. This detail only further complicated his narrative.

All of this evidence led detectives to reconstruct the couple’s movements from Jones’ apartment to the movie theater, and eventually to the desert where the crime is suspected to have occurred. A movie theater cup found at the burial site helped investigators establish a link to their date.

Authorities are still working to confirm whether the murder was premeditated or if it unfolded spontaneously, with Santiago admitting the details are somewhat unclear: “I don’t know if he planned this or if it was a coincidence.” Jones’ family reported her missing on July 7 after losing touch for several days, which they found very unusual given their regular communication.

Upon executing a search warrant at Jones’ home, police found her phone left behind and her dog alone in a crate, which added to the suspicions surrounding her disappearance. “It was enough to indicate that there was at least some suspicious nature,” Santiago remarked.

The investigation, which concluded rapidly thanks to the combined efforts of various law enforcement units and advanced technology, led to the discovery of a shallow grave in a remote area. The Coroner’s Office is working on determining the official cause of death, but investigators have already matched clothing found with the body to Jones.

Rodrico, who had a prior history of theft-related offenses and was on probation at the time of his arrest, is currently held on a $2 million cash bail. His previous convictions involve robberies at local gas stations.

Investigators continue to await more forensic results and insights from the coroner to fully understand the motive behind this tragic event.
