A cafe in Australia is facing backlash after a customer discovered a live maggot inside a ham and cheese croissant.
The incident went viral after a TikTok user, @lillylimeys, posted a video showing the bug crawling in the pastry. The clip, which has garnered over 3 million views, captures her reaction while she was getting her breakfast before work.
Upon reaching her office, she peeled off the top of the croissant to make it easier to eat and was horrified to find the maggot. She quickly recorded the shocking moment, captioning it with a cheeky remark, “I hope everyone’s morning was better than mine.”
A shocking find in a croissant
The cafe, identified as POT in Hahndorf, located in the Adelaide Hills, offered Lilly a refund following her complaint. However, she quipped, “I need more than just a refund. I need treatment,” urging the cafe to realize the seriousness of the situation rather than merely dismissing it.
Health experts note that maggots, which are fly larvae, can potentially cause bacterial poisoning if ingested, as they often infest rotten food. They can also carry dangerous pathogens like salmonella and E. coli.
Experts indicate that maggots can infiltrate food items either during cooking or through poorly sealed storage. The TikTok video attracted a wave of comments from users expressing their disgust and concern.
One commenter said, “They say it’s dramatic, but I never want to eat it again.” Another user agreed, admitting, “I was actually going to die right then and there.”
The investigation begins
A spokesperson from the Mt Barker Council mentioned that they would investigate the complaint. The investigation’s results could lead to further testing and potential fines or legal action if any violations of food safety regulations are found.
The cafe’s formal apology
The cafe released an official apology on Instagram, stating, “A one-time mishap occurred, for which we are mortified and sorry.” They reassured customers that such incidents are exceedingly rare, occurring 99.99999% of the time.
Despite this reassurance, many commenters felt the apology was inadequate given the severity of the situation. One individual pointed out, “There were maggots in the food. This is not a one-off ‘oops’.” Another echoed similar sentiments, calling it a serious health risk.
A personal follow-up
Lilly later posted a follow-up video, now deleted, claiming that the cafe’s apology fell short. She described the moment she discovered the maggot, explaining, “I picked up a piece of meat and ate it, looked down, and saw a little squirmy thing in my hand.” Afterward, she messaged the cafe and urged them to stop selling croissants immediately.
The cafe acknowledged the issue and initially promised a refund. However, Lilly expressed her disbelief at their casual reaction, saying, “It’s an insane reaction to have maggots in your meat.” After contacting the city council, she was relieved to hear that they would investigate the matter.
“I’m just shocked by the whole experience,” she said.
Further apologies from the cafe
On Thursday, the cafe issued another public apology via Instagram. The message included an acknowledgment of the seriousness of the incident and stated that they take full responsibility. The cafe owner expressed regret over the mishap and vowed to discontinue pre-made meals to avoid future incidents.
The owner concluded the post with a heartfelt message, asking for understanding from customers while reaffirming their commitment to food safety.
As of now, both Lilly and the cafe have been contacted for further comments.
