Incident at Florida County Meeting Involving Woman in Burqa
During a public comment session at a county commissioners’ meeting in Florida, a woman dressed in a Muslim burqa stood up to speak, but she didn’t deliver any verbal comments. Instead, she played a recording of the Islamic call to prayer, leading to her removal from the meeting.
According to reports, the woman was “covered head-to-toe in black, with only her left eye visible.” The incident caught the attention of local news media, which noted her choice to silently play the recording rather than engage directly with the audience.
Dave Eggers, the chair of the Pinellas County Board of County Commissioners, pointed out that there were rules requiring speakers to deliver commentary instead of using recordings. He requested several times that she stop the recording, stating, “Ma’am, you’re going to have to stop. Stop the music, stop the tape.” After she continued to ignore his requests, a deputy from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office came to escort her out of the meeting room.
There was some tension in the room as several attendees reacted to her removal, arguing with Eggers about the situation. He urged the audience to maintain decorum, reminding them that they were all part of the community. “We’re all people living together here,” he explained. Eggers reiterated the meeting’s rules, clarifying that playing a recording didn’t constitute making a comment and that’s why she was asked to leave.
The background to this incident involved a controversial vote earlier this month regarding the expansion of the Masjid Al Rahman mosque. Many residents voiced their concerns during the meeting, opposing the mosque’s expansion based on various issues, including women’s rights in Muslim-majority countries. One speaker expressed that allowing the mosque to grow would be akin to endorsing a “totalitarian ideology” that goes against Western values.
Conversely, some residents supported the mosque’s expansion. One woman mentioned their long-standing neighborhood relationship and the mosque’s desire to enhance its structure to better reflect its religious significance.
Reports have identified the woman in the burqa as Selene Al Jamal. The sheriff’s office confirmed that she was removed without any further incident and would not face charges related to this occurrence.
